Annual National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores

In Coastal Alabama, we love shrimp so much that, for 46 years, we’ve dedicated an entire weekend to them down in Gulf Shores. Clearly, this is a clever idea seeing as the Annual National Shrimp Festival attracts over 300,000 people over the course of the weekend. Taking place this year from October 12-15, this is one festival you won’t want to miss!

Shrimp –the star of this show—will prominently be featured by locals from your favorite restaurants as well as regional vendors who will pull out all of the stops as they prepare hundreds of pounds of the crustacean sensation each day.  In addition, the festival has music, contests, and family-fun highlights to make the weekend interesting (as though trying to sample all the different shrimp preparations weren’t interesting enough).

From 10:00 to 10:00 each day, live music in a variety of genres as varied as the culinary influences going into the shrimp preparation will be playing. In addition to strolling the boardwalk snacking and listening to music, families can indulge their wee ones at the Children’s Activity Village where there will be face-painting, karaoke, games, crafts, and more.

Saturday, October 14th,2017 is jam-packed with events, so if you can only make it one day, this is the day:

Families can work up an appetite together in the annual sand sculpture contest, which takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Also on the Saturday is the 10K / 5K run. The 5K has been a part of the festival since 1977. Not only do run proceeds go to benefit the Coastal Baldwin Education Enrichment Foundation, a little jog guarantees your day of noshing will be guilt-free.

Between the food and the sand castle contest, check out the American Idol style contest that will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Shrimp Fest Singing for Scholarships features competitors from Baldwin County High Schools; prizes will include scholarships for themselves as well as matching funds for their schools. Now, that’s something to sing about.
